Elementary Spanish News - November 2013

The Lower Elementary students are practicing storytelling.  They can demonstrate comprehension by retelling a story and using their own words to recount events.  I love when a student retells a story, as the activity builds confidence in making presentations and in their ability to speak a new language. This conversational recounting of a story also improves their fluency.

In the Middle Elementary classroom, the students are working with personal descriptions. The students wrote names of things they like on a big piece of paper.  We use these words/ideas as the basis for our descriptive sentences.  The students picked a few of their favorite things and wrote complete sentences about the things they like, and after asking some questions, about things their friends like.  For instance, Michaela le gusta leer (Michaela likes to read), and someone will ask ¿Dónde lee Michaela? (Where does Michaela read?).  Using the information provided, students wrote very interesting stories about one or two of their classmates.

The Upper Elementary students went on a scavenger hunt in a Spanish grocery store.  Each student was given a list of items to find in a grocery store.  The students found their items!  They were very interested in comparing the foods from other countries that were available.

Some of the Upper Elementary students are reading Spanish novels.  These students are preparing book reports or presentations about their reading material.

Thank you to all of you who visited the Spanish classroom during Family and Friends!

Gracias,

Maria Asunción
