December Spanish

“The senses, being the explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge.”
-Maria Montessori

Lower Elementary students made puppets representing their families.

Lower Elementary students did a Hanukkah presentation in which everyone had a chance to ask questions and play with dreidels.

Middle Elementary students worked on making family trees. They learned Spanish vocabulary to describe the family, including uncle (tio), cousin (primo), etc. Then they put each member of their family in chronological order on a family tree.

To reinforce the verb vivir (to live), Middle Elementary students built a house made of sticks.

The students learned about the Cultural Celebration “Las Posadas,” a Mexican tradition in which people go from house to house looking for a place to stay. Middle Elementary students did a small presentation in Spanish.

Upper Elementary students drew family portraits and practiced descriptions about each member of their family. They had a chance to see that each family is UNIQUE.
Ex: Mi mama es alta. (My mom is tall.)

Upper Elementary students also wrote stories about how they celebrate the holidays with their families. They all had a chance to practice food vocabulary.

Each student from Upper Elementary chose a celebration from around the world or from the U.S.A. to present to their classmates. It was a great lesson for students to learn about festivals from all around the world. There was music, food, and information about each celebration. Their presentations were great!

Middle School students chose one thing they are passionate about to present on. They used props and made PowerPoint presentations in Spanish. Some of the students worked on their presentations for more than two months. We will continue their presentations in January.

Middle School students had a lesson on how people in Spain celebrate their holidays. We compared similarities and differences in food, family, songs, school, etc.

Middle School students wrote a play using their own version of how people in Spain celebrate Navidad en Espana.

In Spain and in many Latin American countries, people welcome the New Year by eating 12 grapes, one for each month of the year. They eat the grapes one by one for each ring of a bell. According to the tradition, each person who eats the grapes will have 12 months of prosperity.

Happy New Year! “¡Feliz Año Nuevo!”
