Elementary Spanish News - March 2014

Can we hear the story again?

Lower Elementary students can’t get enough of the stories that they work with every week! The story of a dinosaur who lost his tail has many cognates (words that sound like English words).  Using the cognates, the students get involved in the story and can follow it from the beginning to the end.  We add animals with different types of tails:  larga- long, corta- short, etc. All of the students have a chance to write their own story, using the dinosaur as a model.

Food and Culture

Middle Elementary students were very excited to go to La Hacienda and order their food in Spanish. It was a social and cultural time with friends.  After we came back to school, they requested to do embroidery.  They are happy to start their own sewing project.  While the students are sewing, I read from our novel Las Aventuras de Isabela, a story about a girl who wants the Golden Gate Bridge.

Appreciation, curiosity, empathy, respect, tolerance, creativity

All the books are finished! Middle and Upper Elementary students did a great job writing the stories and drawing the illustrations. The first group of books went to Conexion Americas and the last group (27) went to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

The Weaving piece of art that we start during conferences is also finished and it will be placed on one of the walls at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

Zapateados:  a journey through Hispanic dances, Danzas Aztecas, Mexican Folklorico and Danzas espaňolas (Flamenco)

Upper Elementary students had the opportunity to explore some of these dances during their visit to Casa Azafran.  It was fun see the students dance! They had a great time!

The same dancer from the Global Education Center came to Abintra and did a presentation for the Lower Elementary students as well as some Early Childhood students.
