Español - May

We seek to help our students develop an international perspective through the study of a second language, cultural geography, international festivals, and celebrations.  The month of May was full of cultural activities!

Nuestro Mundo (Our World)

Lower Elementary
After students selected a flag, they found out where the flag was from, drew the flag, and wrote the name of the country, continent, capital and few facts about the country. Each student shared what they had learned with the class.

Lower Elementary students volunteered to share some artifacts, songs, and dances from places around the world. We also had a visit from Emi, a Lower Elementary mom, who taught the students a dance from Latin America.

A fun cultural  activity that Lower Elementary students participated in was piñata-making!  It took many layers of paper, but the students were enjoyed the process. Students decorated the piñata with flags from around the world.  We made El Globo del Mundo! (The globe of the world!) Finally the day came to break open the piñata!

After hitting the piñata, the students celebrated with eating paletas and dancing.

Middle Elementary
Can soccer unite the World?
Middle Elementary students enjoyed playing soccer.  Students wrote their ideas about how soccer can unite people from other countries.  Soccer is a sport that is played around the world. In some countries they call it futbol (football). All the Middle Elementary students decorated a soccer ball with friendly Spanish messages.

Our world
Middle Elementary wrote sentences and stories using the names of transportation, countries, rivers, and continents in Spanish. They are using the verb ir (to go) and voy (I am going).

Here is an a example:
India está en Asia.  Voy a India en avión. La capital de India es New Deli.   India is in Asia. I’m going to India in a plane. The capital of India is New Dehli.

ME students celebrated the end of the year with chips and salsa and a lot of dancing.

Upper Elementary
Global citizen
After a whole school year of correspondence with their e-pals in Barcelona, Spain, Upper Elementary students created a chart comparing looks and likes with their e-pals. It was nice for the students to see how much we are all alike.

Como ayudar a nuestro Mundo (How can we help our world)
A group of Upper Elementary students made a video of things that they are doing to be a good citizen of the world.

Students wrote a paper completely in Spanish explaining their plans. They were very impressive.

Students chose a book from different countries and did a book report. We finished the last Spanish class of the year with a presentation and students brought food from the countries they presented on.

International food tasting to celebrate another wonderful year!
