Upper School Art - First Semester Wrap-Up

Our current art exhibition will be closing soon after the second semester begins, so I encourage you to spend some time with this powerful work. Our young artists have been incredibly focused and productive, and this exhibition beautifully represents many of their efforts.

Clay artists have been making tiles, sculpture, and functional pieces.

Students have been practicing one and two point perspective drawing, as well as drawing and painting from the still life.

Many especially enjoyed making mixed media drawings with charcoal and pastel. The drawings are begun by toning the paper by scraping and softly rubbing pigment into the surface of the paper. Next the artist can add lines, shapes, textures, and colors, but can also draw by erasing back to the white of the paper. It is a process that readily encourages exploration and experimentation. Many students find it quite enjoyable and rewarding. It can be rather messy, and for some that’s a real bonus!

Be on the look out for our next show in January; the studio is bursting at the seams with new work.

Thank you,
John Toomey
